Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT)

People come to individual therapy for many reasons: to get support with a particular challenge, to better understand and change recurring patterns in relationships, or simply out of curiosity about what could unfold if they intentionally set aside time for themselves.

Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy is a highly effective, evidence-based therapy model that provides a roadmap to navigating our own experience, and meaningfully sharing it with others.

How EFIT Works

EFIT is an attachment-oriented, experiential model. This model understands that we all need to feel safe and connected to the important people in our lives. This is how we can survive, explore, be flexible and thrive. Life experiences taught each of us different strategies for dealing with challenges, emotions, and relationships. These strategies can work well and become our assets. Other times, strategies that were necessary and useful at one point can turn into rigid moves that no longer serve us. In these situations, we are still doing our best, but we get stuck in negative patterns – at times even creating the very outcomes we were trying to prevent.

This is all understandable because, as EFIT points out, all behaviour makes sense in the context of our lives. We all learned different ways of navigating situations we found ourselves in. EFIT helps people clarify their current patterns of interactions, and the good reasons they keep happening. Being human, we all have fears and longings related to ourselves and the important people in our lives. EFIT shows us how our unmet needs and unprocessed longings tweak our behaviour and affect us. The model then provides a pathway towards better understanding our experience, accessing greater flexibility and sharing in a way that helps us feel lighter and connected.
